Policemen, carabinieri and mafiosi in the city of Palermo (1962-1974)This article examines the history of the police in the city of Palermo between the 1960s andthe first half of the 1970s. These years were particularly important, given the fact that thesecurity apparatus began to organize in order to contrast the mafia, following the increasein criminality and the transformation of the political climate. The article devotes particularattention to the various Quaestors involved, as well as to the mobile operational team which, acting on behalf of the Judicial Police Force, had a crucial role from the point of view ofthe investigations. Furthermore, in order to provide a thorough picture of the institutions’response to organized crime, it examines the experience of the carabinieri’s peripheralstructures. What emerges from the article is the complex relationship that developed amongall the bodies involved, and between these and the judicial authorities, which led to theslowing down of the actions aimed at fighting organized crime.
