Abstract: In Italy, the network of clinical research centres (IRCCS) has for decades been the fundamental pillar of research conducted within the National Health Service (NHS). The IRCCS Fatebenefratelli of Brescia is the only one in Italy with psychiatry as its official recognition area. The objective of this chapter is to describe and discuss the research activities conducted by the Unit of Epidemiological and Evaluative Psychiatry (UOPEV) of the IRCCS Fatebenefratelli over a decade (2009-2020). These research activities fall within three major areas: epidemiological research, clinical research and health services research. Epidemiological projects include the ‘World Mental Health Survey Initiative’, a large general population study involving as many as 29 countries (WMHSI), a project on patients treated in residential facilities (PERDOVE), a cohort study on hospitalized older patients (PERDOVE-Older people), a study on the incidence and prevalence of depressive disorders in people with type 2 diabetes (INTERPRET-DD), two studies on mentally ill and risk of violent behaviour (VIORMED and EU-VIORMED), and the use of telemedicine for the management of patients with depression, multiple sclerosis or epilepsy (RADAR-CNS). In the area of clinical research, we will briefly present a trial on the use of intranasal oxytocin for the treatment of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia (OXIS), psychoeducation for patients with bipolar disorder, and the DIAPASON project on the daily time use in people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Finally, we will briefly present the MILESTONE project focusing on health services research. This review will allow a critical discussion about the state of research in mental health and will allow to formulate proposals on innovative research areas for the next decade.
