Background. Genderqueer people face numerous challenges in their lives related to hetero-sexism and cisgenderism and are exposed to a greater risk for violence. As regards to sexual and romantic relationships, in recent years, online dating has become increasingly popular and widespread worldwide, changing the way people get in touch with new potential partners. Aim. The purpose of this study is to investigate genderqueer people’s experiences, motives and emotions in the context of dating applications. Drawing on the microaggressions frame-work, the Authors conducted three in-depth interviews with queer adults to assess the most common situations genderqueer individuals face while using dating apps and the reasons for using these devices. Data analysis. Thematic Analysis was used to extract insights from the interviews. Results. Participants’ experiences reflected both different forms of discrimination, victimi-zation and fetishization and more positive interactions, underlining the positive potential of dating apps. Results revealed three main themes 1) Users, motives and benefits related to da-ting apps use, 2) Self-disclosure, and 3) Experiences in the context of dating apps. The last included three different subthemes: a) Homogenization and Morbidity, b) Fetishization and Objectification, and c) Delegitimization and Discrimination. Despite several limitations, this study helps shedding light on the psychological impact these experiences have on genderqueer minority in the context of online dating.
