Pasuale Villani: the consistency of an eclectic humanist The article aims at highlighting the cultural and human profile of Pasquale Villani, pinpointing his main achievements. Villani proves to have been a scholar well capable of absorbing original historiographical perspectives, of incorporating them in a renewed history of the Mezzogiorno and of enforcing the relationship between history and social sciences. Throughout his scientific activity, Villani has confirmed his loyalty to the paradigm of economic and social history, which he has implemented rejecting any dogmatic bias, both on an ideological and methodological level, and proving receptive to suggestions coming from ‘microhistorical school’ as well as from ‘cultural turn’.
Keywords: Pasquale Villani, economic and social history, history of the Mezzogiorno, «Annales», microhistory.
