The transfer of the remains of Franco from the Valley of the Fallen in 2019 means the end of the Spanish exception within the European pattern of memory politics towards the legacy of dictatorships. However, the contradictory management of those sites of memory intimately linked to the personal biography of the dictators is not only a Spanish phenom-enon, as shown by the cases of Predappio, Braunau am Inn and Santa Comba Dâo, among others. Most post-dictatorial regimes dealt with those sites in contradictory ways, and faced similar dilemmas. This essay aims at highlighting the common traits to those debates.
