The urgently needed revitalization of trade unions can receive impetus and orientation from scientific findings. It seems obvious that psychology could be useful here, as it deals with the experience and behavior of people. But only limited insights can be expected from traditional psychology and quantitative research methods. In contrast, this paper presents Critical Psychology (Kritische Psychologie) as an alternative to explore the reasons why workers (do not) organize and engage in trade unions. To highlight the distinctiveness of criticalpsychological trade union research, it is compared with purely quantitative-psychological and sociological trade union research. On this way the article presents central concepts, methodological implications, and some thematically relevant studies in the field of Critical Psychology. It is assumed that this approach fits very well with the emancipatory claim of trade unions to contribute to the social emancipation of the working classes.
