The article aims to emphasize the Dante’s literary figure through the eyes of Francesco Lomonaco (1772-1810), as a Lucan intellectual who joined the Parthenopean Republic in 1799 and, following its failure, taught history and geography at the Scuola miliare in Pavia since 1805. According to the principle that where is a single language there is also a single identity of a nation, Lomonaco, in his work Vite degli eccellenti italiani (1802), introduces Dante as the father of Italian literature who need founding on the identity of modern Italians. The importance of Dante in the mind of Lomonaco was due to the unfortunate and similar events they both faced as refugees for political reasons: Dante left Florence, Lomonaco escaped from Naples. That similar lifestyle was even captured by Alessandro Manzoni in a sonnet dedicated to his friend Lomonaco.
