Relations between the Holy See and the Spanish Monarchy in the second half of the Eighteenth century were characterized by tension. The main objective of this work is to analyze some of its testimonies in certain political situations, starting from the study of the gift practice, which was part of the ceremony associated with the public entrance of the apostolic nuncios to Madrid. We will observe four entrances - one for the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-1759) and three for that of the successor, Charles III (1759-1788) - which will allow us to investigate what lies behind the merely material aspects of the objects sent by the Pope to the Spanish Kings and members of their Court during the century.
Keywords: Gift, Diplomacy, Holy See, Spanish Monarchy, Apostolic Nuncio.
