The second part of this essay (the fi rst was published in the last issue of «Ventunesimo Secolo») intends to demonstrate that Craxi was the last statesman, after Aldo Moro and Ugo La Malfa, to be aware of the political-institutional roots of the Italian crisis, trying to give it a solution. He was, in fact, the promoter of a transition of the Italian political system, that started at the end of the 1970s and which by no means ended with the collapse of the "first" Republic, with profound characteristics of socio-economic crisis. A transition that he was unable to achieve, just when he had given a signifi cant testimony of his political abilities, remaining for almost four years head of the Government, with a quite favourable reception from public opinion.

Keywords: Craxi Government, Italian Politics, Italian Socialist Party, Italy in the long 1980s
