The lengthy studies on Istrian folklore have promoted an idea of this area as particularly rich in folk traditions. This paper examines the role these traditions and related studies have played in Italian memories of the traumatic events that took place in Istria during and immediately after World War II (the foibe and the Istrian exodus). Memory studies have shown a considerable continuity between the interpretation of the Istrian events in Fascist propaganda (with its anti-Slavic sentiment) and the nationalization and holocaustization of their memory in Italy after 1989. This paper tries to corroborate this continuity thesis by focusing on the role that folklore has played in that propaganda and in contemporary interpretations.
