Which setting for the suffering of the subject. Starting from the broad meaning of setting, understood as the set of manifest and invisible or implicit dimensions, the authors set out to analyse how it has been considered in relation to the request for help by suffering people. They emphasize how the concrete and explicit di-mensions such as place, time, frequencies etc. have relative importance compared to the therapist’s implicit dimensions such as personal and scientific conceptions and worldview. After a brief historical excursus of the individual psychoanalytic setting, they pause to analyse its extension as proposed by some authors including Kaës, Lo Verso and Losso, as well as their theoretical vision and Weltan-schauung. They also mention Michele Minolli’s conception of suffering, no long-er linked to intrapsychic needs in the conflict between biological instances and cultural needs, nor even as a derivative of particular types of bonds, but connected to the unfolding of the subject’s life and to the subject’s difficulty in actively dealing with his own existence. The second part of the article focuses on the es-tablishment of the therapy group and the interpretation of family interactions.
