The Fieschi were an aristocratic dynasty of rural origin, whose power relied on their fiefs. The family settled in Genoa developing some peculiar strategies during the 14th century, which are analyzed in the paper. First, the Fieschi built a monumental settlement over the hill of Carignano, which is both outside the city walls and close to the center. The family was also characterized by a Guelph and ecclesiastical identity. During the 14th century, the armed side of the family progressively diversified itself from the purely ecclesiastical one, guardian of the dynastic assets in the city. The paper compares these relationships with those of other civic alberghi, in order to highlight an alternative family-based model developed by Fieschi. The paper also investigates the importance of kinship; the recruitment of new associates, tax exemptions and marriage policies as elements of the mentality of an aristocratic family in a mercantile context.
Keywords: Fieschi, family strategies, Genoa, urban settlement, factions, alberghi.
