The article aims to investigate the discussion, within the British military leadership, on whether or not to recognise Italian partisans as regular combatants, therefore part of the regular army and entitled to the protection of international conventions on war. The discussion began in response to increasing German atrocities during the summer of 1944. It dragged on, without reaching a proper conclusion, until the end of the Second world war. The analysis of this discussion allows us to enrich the understanding of the relationship that the Resistance developed with the armed forces, and the idea of a "new" army for the Italian democracy. An idea that, just like the British proposal of recognising the partisans as proper combatants, never saw the light of day.
