In this paper we will deal with the transformation of migration routes crossing the western Balkans, focusing on Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. We will describe the effects of the western Balkans route on these countries, especially from the standpoint of the procedures of transit flows, of return, asylum and international protection, highlighting differences and similarities in their migration policies also in relation with their regional cooperation and the cooperation with the EU. In the conclusions we will describe how for Europe is important to develop a stricter co-operation with the countries crossed by the western Balkans route, given the dy-namic of transit flows and the transition of these countries towards new phases of the migration cycle that call for a shift in perspective.
Keywords: Balkan route; transit migrations; migratory policies; Albania; Monte-negro; Kosovo.
