Of evil and wars. The enigmatic existence of evil on the one hand coincides with the natural decomposition of all forms of existence; on the other hand, it is the result of the power that human beings have towards mutual destruction. If in the first case evil is immediate, thus outside the guilt-punishment pair, in the second case it is the result of an intentional orientation and as such on the one hand it is attributable and on the other it would be avoidable. One of the peaks of human destructive capacity is the scenario of war. While violence may be reactive in na-ture, in itself instinctual, wars tend to be prepared for, thus changing the defensive perspective into an aggressive action. A terrible connotation of war is that it generates lives lost forever; irreparable damage and consequently every war won is in itself, for humanity, always a defeat. Only a gratuitous commitment to good-ness makes it possible to imagine a human existence without war.

Keywords: evil, enigmatic evil, evil towards a natural decomposition, evil as the fruit of the power of mutual self-destruction, war, instinctual defence, war as anticipated vio-lence, defence, offence, law, "state violence", non-compensable harm, gratuitous commitment to good.
