After a preliminary analysis of suicidal epidemiology, this article then deals with the concept of suicidality and the different explanatory models of suicidal and para-suicidal behviour, including references to deliberate self-harm. Other relevant topics include the concept of hopelessness, effects on the therapist from treating a patient with suicidal ideation and psychoterapy practise, the topic of comorbidity, as well as the relationship between prevention and psychotherapy. This article concludes with a short review of a clinical case.
