The need for communication between primary care and specialist care in the field of mental health has meant that in recent years particular attention has been paid to the figure of the Primary Care Psychologist, a figure who, placed alongside the family physician and first choice paediatricians, could offer primary psychological care. This would guarantee taking charge of those situations of discomfort and malaise that require timely listening and preventive action, essential to prevent psychological difficulties from turning into illness. Italy is taking its first steps in this matter, but what happened and is happening in the rest of Europe? This article aims to shed light on what other European countries have done in the field of primary care psychology and in particular, through three scientific publications, it looks at the thirty-year experience of the Netherlands (Derksen, 2009); to the pioneering experience carried out at the Health Service of Lanzarote (Gomez et al., 2019) and to a recent experience in Belgium (Jansen et al., 2022).
Keywords: Primary Care Psychologist; brief psychological interventation; primary care/specialist care; biopsychosocial model; family physician.
