This review essay presents some insights from Andrea Riccardi’s book, La guerra del silenzio. The volume benefitted from the opening to scholars of the records related to the pontificate of Pius XII preserved in the Vatican Archives. In addition to illuminating new information on the position of the Holy See and the Catholic Church during World War II, the author of the review critically discusses some historiographical contested debates such as the Pope’s silence, the failure to condemn the violence perpetrated by the Nazis, and the Vatican’s diplomatic role.

Keywords: Pius XII, WWII, Vatican archives, Pius’ XII silence, national-socialism, Vatican diplomacy
