A multifactorial aetiology involving biological, social, psychological and environmental aspects, is recognized in mental disorders. This article highlights the importance of integrating pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatments with psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) to improve the functional outcome and quality of life of patients with severe mental disorders. The Italian Society for Psychosocial Rehabilitation’s (SIRP) production of best practice recommendations for adult PSR has provided a useful document for mental health professionals to implement effective interventions for different psychopathological disorders. A summary of the rationale and methodology used to develop the recommendations is proposed and future perspectives are highlighted.
