The aim of this contribution is to understand the extent to which the policies, practices, and rhetoric of the New Deal promoted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt had an impact on the inception of the process of European economic integration, beginning with the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). In particular, it suggests that a modified version of the New Deal brought in Europe a renewed push for technocratic governance of the economy and a less-than-linear relationship with democracy in Europe; an incentive for strengthening supranational policies; and the possibility of developing economies of scale to stabilize democracy.
