Caporalato (the gangmaster system) is a practice historically rooted in the country’s main agricultural production areas. The caporali have played a functional role in the development of an agricultural labour market. However, dynamics of illicit or illegal labour intermediation, often connected to severe exploitation, have also been observed in the history of shipbuilding, construction, and mining labour. This essay aims to provide, through primary sources and the contemporary press, a first diachronic and comprehensive reading of the evolution of labour intermediation from the immediate post-war period to the 1980s.
Keywords: labour, gangmaster, migration, farmworkers
