The analysis of child poverty needs to include a broader conceptualization of poverty that goes beyond monetary scarcity and includes forms of deprivation with respect to basic needs and rights. This study aims to investigate the evolution and persistence of both monetary poverty and multidimensional deprivation among children in Tanzania, using longitudinal data collected in 2008/09 and in 2012/13. The results show that the degree of persistence is different, and that monetary poverty is more persistent than multidimensional deprivation. In both cases, the role of structural variables, is relevant, although with different effects. Finally, substantial regional differences persist within the country, in terms of level and change, for both phenomena.
