Before Covid-19, the debate on tourism flows oscillated between complaints about touristification and the attempt to govern overtourism with instruments that were not always effective. Since the pandemic, the issue has focused on the concrete effects of tourism on the lives of city residents. This text considers the changes brought about by tourism in Palermo’s historic centre, discussing the neo-liberal urban policies that have guided the most recent choices of the municipality. Through semi-structured interviews, discourse analysis and critical visual analysis, the text also highlights the contradictions in the discourses of those who contest touristification, those who govern the city and those who represent it, with the aim of reflecting theoretically on the forms of touristification in Southern Europe and the development prospects of the Palermo case.
