Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta is recognized as a national and international center of excellence in the field of neuroscience. The Institute combines clinical care with advanced scientific research in neurological diseases, structured along four main research lines: preclinical experimental neurology, pathogenesis ofneurological disorders and precision medicine, clinical trials in neurology and neurosurgery, and outcome research. In 2024, the Institute reported approximately 5,100 hospital admissions and over 50,000 outpatient visits, alongside significant neurosurgical activity, with 2,500 procedures performed annually. Currently, 246 clinical studies are underway, enrolling a total of 4,138 patients in 2024, across both profit and non profit trials. Collaborations with pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and public funding bodies enable the acquisition of resources that are reinvested in human capital, equipment, and training. In the 2025 edition of the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals ranking, Besta was ranked first in Italy and among the leading centers worldwide in the field of neuroscience, reaffirming its strategic role in both the national and international landscape. This legacy further amplifies the organizational, managerial, and structural challenges that the Institute is called to address.
