This paper explores the looting of Italian army barracks and warehouses by the civilian population after the 8th of September 1943. It analyzes the extent of the phenomenon, the motives of the looters, and the reactions of the German occupiers. After the announcement of the armistice, which resulted in the disbanding of the Italian army and the occupation of large parts of Italy by the German armed forces, looting of Italian army barracks and warehouses, civilian camps, train carriages, bakeries, and grocery shops was widespread. Such incidents can be found not only in numerous large cities, but also in smaller centres. The essay identifies incidents in approximately 100 municipalities across the country. As a complex act whose motives range from civil resistance, hunger, and social need to selfishness and greed for profit, the analysis of the phenomenon of looting illustrates the different, and often contradictory, faces of civil society immediately after the 8th of September.
