From 2002 to 2015, under the direction of Thomas Insel, the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the largest public agency funding mental health research, invested approximately $20 billion in neuroscience research, underfunding clinical research. These policies have not produced significant improvements in mental health indicators, and it is hoped that the NIMH will invest significantly more in clinical research and psychosocial therapies, especially psychodynamic therapies.
