By distinguishing between ‘failure in work’ and ‘failure of work’, and providing a concise historical overview of ideas about work since Antiquity, the author aims to demonstrate how ‘failure in work’ presupposes a work in which the worker can achieve self-fulfillment, and is therefore a positive failure, in the sense that it presupposes work in which it is possible to build one’s identity, even if not always successfully. On the other hand, ‘failure of work’ implies work that does not have a positive impact on the construction of the person and is therefore work that can be rejected.
