The author offers a broad comparison between the courts of the Savoy, the Medici, Naples, and the Republic of Venice produced in different periods and in different ways (regulations, instructions, memoirs, correspondence) congenial to the various forms of exercising power. A common feature is the importance attributed to the pedagogical and political function of the paggerie (body control, etiquette, military service, bureaucracy). Through the analysis of numerous published and unpublished sources considered over a long period of time, new avenues of research are indicated on the symbolic value of spaces and architecture, on family relationships and the role of feelings and personal vocations beyond the imposed and codified models of the society of the ancien régime.
Keywords: service, honor, etiquette, education, military careers, vocations, traditions and family destinies.
