This article introduces the special issue of Mondi Migranti dedicated to the nexus between migration and marginalization, a topic of growing significance and interest, yet still understudied. While public debate tends to reduce the complexity of this phenomenon to a question of security or urban decorum, this essay aims to deconstruct such narratives by providing a theoretical framework for understanding the intersectional and multidimensional nature of homelessness among immigrants. Drawing on recent data, the analysis identifies the main risk factors driving socio-housing exclusion in relation to migratory processes. Specifically, it examines the impact of poverty and occupational segregation and analyzes the role of institutional barriers and the logic of welfare chauvinism that limit access to social benefits. The paper explores the marginalization generated by migration policies and, furthermore, considers relational and individual vulnerabilities. In particular, the analysis focuses on the fragility of social networks, the decline in mental and physical health, and issues related to drug addiction and post-detention processes. The article thus offers an integrated perspective that connects systemic and personal levels, providing the interpretative framework for the various national and European case studies presented in this special issue.
