The subject of feminine vicissitudes – through development, pathology, and imagination – is studied across many disciplines, with debates that remain unresolved. Psychoanalysis suggests that human identity is not an innate essence or guaranteed biological trait, but rather a process shaped by relationships. Our approach explores culturally conditioned defense mechanisms that arise from anxiety when confronting what is ‘different’, forming in early childhood and later manifesting in adult identity. Romantic relationships reflect these processes, often leading to neurotic outcomes like splitting, denial, and repression of self and others, within a dynamic of unconscious collusion. Attempts to escape rigid male and female definitions often result in defensive regression toward undifferentiation and ambiguity.

Keywords: Human identity, gender, psychoanalysis, defense mechanisms, maternal roles
