The article examines the key factors behind the adoption of the XVIII Amendment and the rise of Prohibition (19201933). It highlights the links between the Prohibition Party, mass immigration from southern and eastern Europe, and ethnic organized crime in New York City. Long a temperance stronghold yet a hub for immigrants attached to alcohol as cultural identity, The city embodied a deep contradiction. During World War I, Republicans misjudged prohibition’s broader applicability, fueling bootlegging and gangsterism.
