Current scholarship on the Tangentopoli (“Bribesville”) years remained meagre and limited in its scope. This paper aims to contribute filling this gap by examining the relationship between the Italian Social Movement (Msi) and the “Clean Hands” Operation during the period 1992-94. This paper unfolds in three stages. It explores the MSI’s strong support for the investigations, especially in 1992, in an attempt to break the political isolation it had been experiencing since the 1940s. It then explains how, in 1993, the MSI, while in transition to National Alliance (An), developed a more critical stance towards the Milanese pool of magistrates, which was partly suspected of playing along with the Democratic Party of the Left. Finally, following the political agreement with Berlusconi and the victory in the 1994 elections, the article shows how this alliance, as well as the internal party fragmentation, led An towards a “not to prosecute” stance on judicial matters.
