Domenico Borasio (1899-1984) was the leading figure in the Italian sugar industry during the years he served as CEO of Eridania (1947-1970), a giant in the field. He led his company through the critical junctures of post-war reconstruction and European integration, repre-senting and defending the interests of sugar producers both at the national and community levels. His actions were fully embedded within a tradition characterized by lobbying, go-vernment protection, and cartelization, already a defining feature of the European sugar sec-tor. This study preliminarily examines the peculiar formation of the “Sugar Baron’s” cultural capital, focusing on some of his journalistic initiatives, particularly with regards to entrepre-neurial freedom and political consciouness. The resulting portrait is that of a Catholic and conservative entrepreneur, skilled at establishing strong and productive institutional rela-tionships within Confindustria and the governing parties.
Keywords: Borasio, Eridania, italian and international sugar industry, lobbying, institutional relations, cultural capital.
