The world of work is constantly changing at the macro level (production systems), the meso level (organisational models) and the micro level (individuals’ working lives), and is characterised by a continuous process of breaking down and rebuilding production processes. It is within this scenario, in which organisational models undergo constant changes towards increasing complexity, that the Workers’ Safety Representative (RLS) operates. This role is established by law to oversee working conditions and, in particular, to carry out ongoing preventive activities regarding potential events harmful to workers’ health in the workplace. This article draws on a research project carried out in a province in northern Italy, promoted by a body representing the social partners, which aimed to conduct an initial assessment of the role of the Rls from various perspectives, particularly within industrial enterprises.
