The article introduces a discussion on the book Leggere in Europa. Testi, forme, pratiche (secoli XVIIIXXI) [Reading in Europe. Texts, forms, practices (18th21st centuries)], edited by Lodovica Braida and Brigitte OuvryVial, and published by Carocci (2023). The volume, which is part of a relatively recent and highly fruitful strand of research, offers a number of contributions focusing on three areas, in line with the editors’ research interests: the transformation of reading from the 18th century to the present day;; the emergence of new categories of readers and the publishing strategies aimed at them;; and the material forms through which texts have reached readers. To reflect, at least in part, the interdisciplinary nature of the volume and its longterm perspective, the discussion has been entrusted to Massimo Stella, literary theorist;; Emmanuelle Chapron, early modern historian;; and Maria Luisa Betri, contemporary historian.
