This research examines the consequences of early maltreatment with reference to the theoretical perspectives of Complex Trauma as a Developmental Disorder (Courtois & Ford, 2009) and the Process Oriented Model (Di Blasio, 2005) on environmental risk factors. A qualitative analysis was carried out on the socio-anamnestic files and structured interviews with the child’s clinician were undertaken. The sample comprises 87 children between the ages of 3 and 18 who were followed by "Il Faro", the specialist centre for child abuse and neglect in Bologna. The results show a correlation between the examined psychic functions and exposure to specific environmental risk factors in the family context. The results therefore indicate the importance of the careful multidimensional assessment (clinical and psychosocial) variables that are crucial for future mental health.
