The access of the children of immigrants to the university is one of the recent im-plications of the processes of stabilization of migration. If at international level the topic is more consolidated and there are several comparative studies, in the Italian case there are no longitudinal data and the first exploratory research is local. The present work is inspired by a research project conducted in two Italian universities about the life paths of a group of university students of immigrant origin. Our analysis is focused on those students who, despite unfavorable previous condi-tions, have managed to overcome the obstacles and arrived to the higher educa-tion. These experiences are in some way "against the current" compared to school and life pathways that they may appear pre-determined. We have chosen, in line with international research, to overturn the traditional perspective by not focusing on the causes of school failure but on the elements that explain the trajectories of success.
