Il Sahel è un’area geografica che, nel tempo, è stato oggetto di molteplici definizioni, climatico-botaniche e politiche: i suoi limiti sono stati disegnati in modi molto diversi. Non mancano posizioni di aperta contestazione del senso stesso di questa denominazione e della relativa delimitazione. Il lavoro proposto prova a immaginare una cartografia capace di rappresentare il movimento incessante di condizioni, limiti e possibilità che caratterizza questa fascia posta fra il Sahara e le umide regioni sudanesi, rendendo la definizione areale del Sahel – allo stesso tempo – possibile e fluida. Si tratta però di ripensare dalle fondamenta, dal loro ‘dato per scontato’, alcuni attrezzi usuali della rappresentazione cartografica, ad esempio il concetto di ‘isoieta’ per identificare le aree climatiche o di ‘confine’ per racchiudere giurisdizioni politiche. Conoscenze provenienti dal fieldwork e competenze nell’elaborazione di dati satellitari e georeferenziati convergono in questo percorso di analisi e di rappresentazione.;
