La presenza di un disturbo mentale in un genitore determina un impatto negativo sullo sviluppo e sul benessere dei figli, e si associa ad un elevato rischio di maltrattamento infantile. Questa rassegna si propone di fornire una panoramica attuale degli effetti dei disturbi psichiatrici sulla genitorialità e della relazione tra la psicopatologia genitoriale e il maltrattamento agito sui bambini. Vengono esaminati alcuni studi che si sono interessati di comprendere in che modo esperienze di vittimizzazione infantile subite dai genitori, associate alla psicopatologia, favoriscono la continuità del ciclo intergenerazionale degli abusi. Tramite l’esplorazione di alcune esperienze internazionali, si sottolinea il bisogno urgente di sviluppare, nel nostro Paese, un adeguato coordinamento tra i servizi con l’intento di promuovere la salute mentale dei bambini e la loro protezione.;
