Although many authors already investigated medium-sized firms applying the case study analysis, most contributions focused on the manufacturing sectors, neglecting service industries. This paper addresses the key success factors and the potential criticalities of medium- sized firms operating in Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS). In particular, the manuscript examines the strategic behavior of a selected well-performing firm, which operates in the Information Technology business. This contribution first investigates the contents of the strategies pursued by the sample firm, evaluating their appropriateness for coping with the changing competitive environment. Moreover, the study examines how the firm conceives and formulates its strategies, also verifying the adoption of various tools for strategy formulation and implementation. In this regard, a specific attention was awarded to the formal or informal nature of such strategic analytical techniques, as well as to the development of implicit decision processes. Addressing the selected case study, the outcomes identify the key competitive leverages allowing Italian medium-sized service firms to compete in highly dynamic business environments, e.g. KIBS. The results unveil both the similarities and the differences existing between the strategic behavior of medium-sized firms in service and manufacturing sectors.
