The article goes back over some core issues regarding the rehabilitation plan of the Carmine neighbourhood in Brescia, critically and self-critically deconstructing the dominant narratives of multi-ethnic neighbourhoods developed by urban studies in Italy and abroad. Based on the belief that descriptions and forms of intervention are strictly interrelated issues, the article deals with the possible languages and narratives that may be mobilised to describe the "cities of difference", not fostering stigmatised points of view, as well as without denying their problems. A core hypothesis is that the capacity to deal with the tensions of "internal" and "external" descriptions of these places is a core factor to exploring new research and policy paths.
