Urban segregation is a structural phenomenon in contemporary capitalist cities. This paper analyses the evolution of the phenomenon in the context of the residential system of a city in Southern Europe - the metropolitan region of Barcelona - between 2001 and 2012. This approach considers the impact of the economic and social crisis initiated in the summer of 2007 and the evolution of the real estate cycle. Increased urban segregation is observed during the study period.
