This article analyzes the gendered self-representations offered by several autobiographical texts written by ex-militants of left-wing armed organizations active in Italy during the so called "years of lead". In particular, it focuses on the role played in these self-representations by references to feminism. This aspect was highly influential on the ways in which authors later redefined their gender representations in the public sphere. While men were reticent to tackle these issues, female authors were willing to explicitly deal with a gender perspective and thus capable of integrating it into their self-representation. By adopting a biographical point of view, this article explores the use and impact of gendered constructions in the process of public memorialization of the "years of lead".
