The text introduces the reader to the concept and to the aesthetic of Vanitas in art history, from Baroque times to the present day: Death representation has deep and quickly shifting implications. Representing our fears, art makes us sink in the domain of the forbidden, which is the realm of the repressed as well. Nowadays the spiritual warning seems converted in an harmless heads-up, in "discarnate symbols", but only apparently.
