The article addresses the growth of electoral abstention in Italy over the last forty years, using Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological-political conceptualization. First, it emphasizes the specificity of a Bourdieusian approach from the point of view of political participation, by examining the historical series of abstention and discussing the results of sample surveys of different heuristic value. The main aim is to highlight both the insufficient political and historiographical attention dedicated to this issue, and the reductionist interpretation of this phenomenon (seen as a form of protest or apathy). Second, the article presents the main results of an ethnographic survey of abstentionists in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, which relied on a Bourdieusian method of investigation: the in-depth discursive interview. The article thus aims to shed light on a phenomenon generally perceived as marginal in the political field, by highlighting its complexity.
