The objective of this contribution is to provide insight into some aspects of the transition from feudal to royal government that took place in the territories seized from the prince of Salerno, Antonello Sanseverino, following the Conspiracy of the Barons. The available documentation makes possible a comparison between the institutional structure of the feud on the eve of the seizure and the monarchical one implanted by Ferdinand I, so that similarities and differences can be highlighted. Particular attention is devoted to the study of captains: officialdom employed in the urban centers of the Kingdom with jurisdictional and governmental prerogatives. The socio-professional profile of the men chosen by the ruler, who totally replaced the previous feudal staff, presents itself as the most significant element of this transition. It emerges how the appointment of an experienced corps of officers from the royal domain seems to have been at the heart of the strategies put in place by the Crown to take over the government of these territories.
Keywords: Baron Conspiracy, principality of Salerno, fiefdom, royal domain, officers, captains.
