Gli studi hanno messo in luce l’influenza dei Presidenti della Repubblica nella politica internazionale dell’Italia. Intrecciando la storia politico-istituzionale e le relazioni internazionali, sulla base di una documentazione inedita dell’Archivio Storico della Presidenza della Repubblica, il volume ricostruisce le dinamiche e i protagonisti dei primi quarant’anni postbellici (1947-1992), prendendo in esame l’operato dei presidenti De Nicola, Einaudi, Gronchi, Segni, Saragat, Leone, Pertini e Cossiga.

Sempre maggiore è oggi l’attenzione all’interazione delle relazioni internazionali con il processo di integrazione europea e lo spazio euro-mediterraneo. Attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare e comparato, il volume si propone di leggere simultaneamente – lungo tutto il secondo dopoguerra – il processo di integrazione, le politiche per lo sviluppo regionale, la proiezione della CEE/UE nel Mediterraneo e in Medio Oriente, con pari attenzione al ruolo dell’UE nelle relazioni internazionali.

La guerra fredda ha investito la sfera dei mass-media, fino a diventare nell’immaginario di milioni di cittadini la «massima fiction dell’epoca», con espressioni nella fotografia e nel cinema, nella radio e nella televisione. Ne è derivata un’ampia produzione culturale, non ancora incentrata con la necessaria sensibilità sull’integrazione europea e sullo spazio mediterraneo. Allargando l’orizzonte oltre la guerra fredda, nel volume si prospetta un fecondo terreno di confronto metodologico e interdisciplinare tra storici e studiosi dei media, tra UE e Mediterraneo.

The aim of the paper is to retrace the evolution of "Right" and "Left", and the political cultures linked to them within the European integration process, after the "Fall of the Wall" in Berlin. The paper started with an overview about the milestones of political struggle between Left and Right from the first Community to the direct elections of EP, showing origin and development of parties’ role within the EEC/EU, and the building - with its peculiarities - of a supranational level even in the field of political competition. The main part of the paper is focused about the impact - and the central role - of Maastricht Treaty and the developments of European integration process over Left and Right political cultures emphasizing their attempts to search new, original and modern strategies to deal with challenges such Economic and Monetary Union, Eastern and Central Europe enlargement, and the framework of international relations following the attack of 9/11.

I tre presidenti (ma ce n'è un quarto). La Costituzione Repubblicana secondo Schifani, Fini e Berlusconi - After the Popolo della Libertà’s win at the 13th and 14th of April 2008 elections, most of the Newscasts on both public and private television welcomed the inaugural speeches made by the President of the Senate Schifani, the President of the Chamber Fini and the Prime Minister Berlusconi as the confirmation of the Italian right wing tradition of government. Looking closer, apart from the formal tributes towards President Napolitano, the three inaugural speeches introduce a substantial breach as regards republican democracy, the balance of popular sovereignty, parliamentary representation and government action, the recognition of the plurality of creeds and religious confessions, of cultural and political pluralism, and the synthesis of the rights of freedom and equality resolutely pursued by the Constituent Assembly. The entire system of the equilibrium of powers between the State bodies and a central part of the bill of rights of the republican Constitution is brought into discussion: with the predominance of the principle of freedom over the principle of equality, the democratic game is bereft of the fundamental dialectics between freedom and equality perceived by Norberto Bobbio as the inseparable nucleus of modern constitutionalism. Thus, it has to be the historian’s task to try and re-establish a virtuous circle between politics, culture and the ability to intervene in the most delicate topics concerning the quality of Italian democracy today. Nell’Italia repubblicana fu spesso nelle amministrazioni municipali che emerse una classe dirigente all’altezza della modernizzazione del Paese e di una democratizzazione della partecipazione politica. Il libro esamina il caso di Pesaro, con attenzione agli anni tra il 1965 e il 1978, in cui sindaco fu Marcello Stefanini. Una vicenda esemplare degli anni della “grande trasformazione”, attraverso un forte nesso tra tradizioni civiche e culture di governo municipale, classi dirigenti e sviluppo della società locale.
