Consultancy to public services in cases of child abuse This research aims to analyze the most important professional difficulties which arise when requesting consultancy in cases of child abuse and neglect and how it can be made more effective. The authors examined 289 cases of consultancies provided by the centre for child abuse "Il Faro" to social services, health services and schools in Bologna and the surrounding area in the three years between 2005 and 2007. The areas of research concern the phase where the request is made and the reasons for it, the particular characteristics of the case and the differences between the various institutions which request consultancy. The main problems which arose concerned the need for methodological comparisons to recognize the signs of distress shown by the child and verify that correct action is taken from a professional point of view, that the extent of harm is correctly evaluated and that it is reported to the Judicial Authorities.
