The objective of the present study is to investigate the relationship between chronic diseases and sexuality, taking into account the fact that chronic diseases are often associated with problems of a sexual nature, in general underestimated and undiagnosed. To identify adequate and efficient modes of intervention by clinicians, relationship aspects and couple dynamics have also been considered. The following clinical conditions have been examined: Multiple Sclerosis, chronic renal diseases, chronic pulmonary diseases, rheumatic and cardiovascular diseases. The different types of chronic diseases present particular challenges to both patients and their families, as well as to medical personnel. There are currently different strategies available to improve the quality of life of the chronically ill and also to render their sexuality more manageable. After a reflection on the obstacles to the dialogue on the subject of sexuality between doctor and patient, also highlighted is the potential of nursing personnel, which can constitute an efficient source of information, capable of combining physical and psychological aspects.
