Surveillance beyond borders: Control by Neapolitan and papal police forces after 1848. The article aims to highlight the impact of the 1848 revolutions on the reorganization of police structures via the analysis of two case-studies: the Papal States and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. By matching a comparative methodology with the analysis of the connections developing in trans-state spaces, the essay shows how the police institutions took on new strategies in order to confront transnational political dissent. Through the investigation of the Police records at Rome and Naples State Archives, it highlights how, as a result of the political crisis, the two Italian policing systems were reshaped by combining the increasing political tasks with a trans-state organization.
